100 thousand cubic meters of concrete poured at the construction site of the Irkutsk Polymer Plant

One hundred thousand of 220,000 cubic meters of concrete have been poured since the start of November 2021. “It is an impressive accomplishment, but within this project we haven’t yet crossed the “equator” of the scheduled work, though we have beaten the previous record and exceeded it several times. The amount of concrete work at Irkutsk Oil Company never exceeded 17 thousand cubic meters per year,” said Mr. Sergey Bobr, the Construction Director of the Irkutsk Polymer Plant.

For comparison, 20,000 cubic meters of concrete were used in the construction of the foundations and concrete trunk of Moscow’s Ostankino Tower, the tallest freestanding structure in Europe. The highest skyscraper in Moscow Citi – Federation Building required 87,000 cubic meters. Irkutsk Polymer Plant is on track to beat the record of Fisht stadium in Sochi, where 200 thousand cubic meters of concrete was poured (the Fisht stadium was constructed for the 2014 Winter Olympics, where it served as the venue for their opening and closing ceremonies).

In 2020–2021 ground works were performed at the construction site of the Irkutsk Polymer Plant: excavation work and construction of solid-cast foundation for large-sized equipment. Installation of this equipment was completed this September. A total of 44 units were delivered to Ust-Kut in the summer of 2020 from a South Korean port via the Northern Sea Route were installed at the construction site. The next stage of work at the site is to install 1,100 pieces of small equipment, auxiliary equipment and systems.

The construction of the polymer plant is performed by Irkutsk Oil Company in Ust-Kut as a part of development of gas-chemical cluster comprising gas production, treatment, transportation and processing facilities. Toyo Engineering, a Japanese engineering company, is involved in the construction of the plant and is responsible for the design and supply of equipment/materials. Gemont is the general contractor for the construction of the polyethylene and ethylene units. The producing capacity of the plant will be over 650 thousand tons of commercial grade polyethylene per year. Engineers and workers from all over Russia, as well as from Japan, Turkey, France, Holland, and the United States work on the construction site.
